Breda Fly Fishing – Private River Don Fishing in Aberdeenshire

Breda Fly Fishing is part of the historic Breda Estate, formerly owned by the late Laird Hamish Maclean and now thoughtfully opened to visitors by his widow Lorna Maclean.

The estate offers a rare combination of tradition, privacy, and outstanding fishing on one of the River Don’s most beautiful stretches. Surrounded by unspoilt landscapes of woodland, farmland and flowing riverbanks, it delivers an authentic Scottish fishing experience in tranquil surroundings.

The Fishings

The Breda Fishings are renowned for both their variety and productivity, with over 20 named pools spread along the 2.5 mile beat.

Anglers will encounter a classic mix of:

• Streamy runs perfect for covering water

• Deeper holding pools where fish rest and run

• Easily wadeable sections in normal conditions

• Comfortable bank fishing in higher water

At approximately 25 metres wide, this stretch of the River Don is particularly well suited to fly fishing, allowing anglers to cover the water effectively without the need for heavy tackle.

Salmon, Sea Trout and Wild Brown Trout

While the River Don is famed for Atlantic salmon and sea trout, it is also widely regarded as producing some of Scotland’s finest wild brown trout.

This particular stretch of river is especially noted for its organic wild brown trout fishing, making it an excellent destination for anglers seeking quality trout sport throughout the season.

Historic catch records from the 1990s show seasons of around 100 salmon from the Breda Fishings, representing approximately 5% of the entire River Don catch at the time — clear evidence of the quality of this water when responsibly managed.

Beats and Access

The fishings consist of 2.5 miles of single-bank river, available either as:

• One complete beat

• Two separate beats with approximately 10 named pools each

Access along the riverbank is excellent, with easy walking routes and four-wheel-drive access where required.

Upstream, the river flows beneath a steep wooded hillside, while further downstream it opens into rolling farmland, creating a varied and scenic fishing environment throughout the beat.

Salmon Fishing:
11 February – 31 October

Trout Fishing:
15 March – 1 September

Day Tickets

• Salmon and wild brown trout: £50 per day

• Wild brown trout only: £40 per day

Limited overnight stays in a bivvy or small tent may be possible by arrangement.
An additional £40 per night applies, and fishing is not permitted overnight.
