Fishing
Anglers can enjoy access to two of the Borders’ most beautiful rivers: the Ettrick and Yarrow, both known for their clean waters, peaceful surroundings, and exciting catches.
Philiphaugh offers private fishing on selected pools along both rivers, ideal for those seeking salmon in the autumn or wild brown trout earlier in the season. With easy access and support from local ghillies, it’s a rewarding option for individuals, families or corporate guests looking to combine sport with serenity.
Philiphaugh Estate offers high-quality single-bank fishing on the River Ettrick and River Yarrow in the scenic Scottish Borders, available for just £45 per rod per day. The fishing is designed to offer a peaceful, uncrowded experience with a maximum of 4 rods per day.
Anglers can fish for Atlantic salmon and wild brown trout, with the season running from February to October/November, depending on water conditions, as both rivers are spate rivers. The fishing is at its best during the autumn months when salmon are running strong. However, people have been known to catch fish during the other months.
There are five main pools across the two rivers, offering varied water and an experience suited to all abilities:
- The Long Pool (Ettrick) is renowned for its strong runs and consistency – ideal for experienced anglers.
- The Bridge Haugh Pool (Yarrow) is easily accessible and well-suited for beginners or relaxed casting.
Additional amenities include:
- Local ghillie services are available for guiding or tuition.
- Tackle hire available by prior appointment.
- Picnic lunches can be ordered in advance and delivered directly to the riverbank.
This is an ideal setup for anglers seeking a quiet, scenic, and personal day of fly fishing in a beautiful part of Scotland.
