Borve Lodge Estate, Harris

The Outer Hebrides

Borve Lodge Estate nurtures a stretch of the most magnificent coastline on the Outer Hebridean Isle of Harris and can provide luxury accommodation for those wishing to enjoy this pristine location.

Borve Lodge Estate is located along some of the most magnificent coastline on the western Scottish island of Harris, and can provide luxury accommodation for those wishing to enjoy this most pristine location.

Our two lead buildings are The Broch and The Rock House. Both houses have won architectural awards for their designs, which are sympathetic to the landscape of West Harris. The Broch is built to be an ancient ruin, within which a contemporary dwelling has been made. And The Rock House appears as a cluster of standing stones, nestled within its own rock garden. The interiors of both houses have been kept as elemental and simple as possible, with extensive use of stone, wood and driftwood from the estate. But within this simplicity, there is true comfort and every modern convenience needed for a self-catering holiday.

Along from the Rock and Broch buildings you will find our family property Claddach House, which sleeps 6. This traditional croft house recently refurbished to a very high standard offers comfort and plenty of space throughout. Visitors can just take a short walk across the wild machair to reach the golden sands of the secluded beach beside the Lodge. Depending on the season, one can swim in the pristine waters, or on stormier days, watch the waves pound in from the north Atlantic. Solitude is easily found: the beach is fully within in the environs of the estate.

Behind the coastline sits Borve Valley, one of the few areas of mature woodland amidst the stark lunar landscape of Harris. Borve loch is nestled within natural rock gardens and heather, beneath a looming hillside, and is a sanctuary for guests to explore and ponder.

The Estate has been a sporting destination since the 1800s, and holds rights for shooting across areas of West Harris. It is also the home of the Laxdale system, a small but bountiful salmon fishery. Fincastle and Laxdale lochs reward those who fish with patience and skill. It is here, where you will find, low secluded in the valley our other family residence, Laxdale Cottage. This property sleeps 5 and has a very traditional cottagey feel, with snug dining area and an open fire. We allow pets here as we know how hard it is to leave them behind The cottage overlooks a loch and small woodland to the north and a mountainous landscape to the south.

Pristine beaches lie along the coastline on either side of the Estate, which is perfectly placed for exploring all of West Harris. More adventurous visitors can enjoy a range of pursuits: sea fishing, kayaking, surfing. The landscape compels one to walk the hills, visit ancient monuments, bird watch. Harris can also be quite a contemplative place, and one can take the time to do some writing, catch up on reading, or maybe paint a picture.

Borve Lodge Estate can provide luxury accommodation for visitors who wish to experience one of the last untamed coastal environments of Europe.

Our two lead dwellings, The Rock House and The Broch, have been built in the most environmentally sympathetic way possible to the stark Harris landscape. Where possible, we used materials directly from the Estate. Stone was quarried from the ground beneath the buildings. These were added to iconic monolithic rocks, lifted from the landscape. We extensively used dry-stone walling methods to give a random, irregular build, as wild as nature itself. Our main building material is Lewisian Gneiss rock, known by geologists to be some of the oldest found, being up to 3 billion years old. Heather from the vicinity has been laid on turf roofs. The result is that both buildings are married into the landscape, and many passing travellers comment that they do not see the buildings at first glance, as both look part of the hillside.

But within each house, amenities are very 21st Century. Under-floor heating and piping hot water comes from air-source heat pumps, ensuring a cosy interior for those inevitable rainy Harris days and nights. Satellite TV and wireless internet provide connectivity during your chill-out time on Harris. And we get no complaints of anyone tiring of the view.

We also have two other properties on the estate suitable for families: an ex-gamekeeper's house in a remote location called Laxdale Cottage and a traditional croft house right on the coast called Claddach House.

•Clay Shooting: A portable automatic ball trap is owned by the estate, and experienced guns are welcome to practice their clay shooting skills.

•Walking: The estate accommodation is on the Borve Valley, which is one of the few areas of mature wood land in West Harris, and is a perfect location for walking and picnics. Beyond the environs of the estate, the walking options are endless
