Mill of Dess Lodge

Near Aboyne - Aberdeen City & Shire

Luxurious Lodge offering guests an unparalleled opportunity to enjoy the best in comfort, cuisine and service in a charming and relaxed environment.

The Dess estate owners have carried out a stylish conversion of a farm steading into a truly luxurious 10 en suite double bedroom Lodge which offers the highest standard of accommodation for their guests. The Lodge is fully staffed and available on a fully catered basis (dinner, bed & breakfast) using the finest locally sourced Aberdeenshire produce.

Finished to a boutique hotel style of specification by the well regarded designers at Melrose, the bedrooms are separated into two accommodation wings – South and North.

Each bedroom is individually designed and named after a pool on the Lower Dess fishing beats of the river Dee on whose banks the Lodge sits. Every room offers Sky TV, Wi-Fi, telephone, jewellery safe, hair dryer, complimentary bathroom products by Scottish Fine Soap and the ultimate in fluffy white robes to ensure our guests’ in-room comfort.

Any bedroom can be made up as twin or double beds to suit personal preference. All bedding is allergy and dust mite free and each room has a range of soft and firm pillows to meet individual needs. There is a limitless supply of white towels with a high GSM rating and lashings of hot water.

On each landing there is a complimentary hot drinks table where guests can make their beverage of choice at any time of the day or night. You might even want to avail yourself of the cookie jar!

The dining and drawing rooms offer the highest standards of comfort for large parties and guests will find that the small but important practical details have been well attended to with the provision of a drying room and secure storage. Even the dogs are provided for with a separate kennel block.

Thank you so much Anna - you are the ultimate hostess! Enjoyed my fishing - but staying here made it all the more special.

15 out of 10 for a stunning relaxing few days. Cannot fault our visit. Beautiful setting. Amazing "house" and Anna is way up there as the perfect hostess. Lovely home cooked food. We had supper here our first night and wish we had stayed in for our second. Thank you and we will be back

Thanks must go to all at the Lodge who made the evening and following day just brilliant. Anna and her team were excellent hosts and so accommodating, they couldn't do enough for us.
The girls (and the rest of the families) we're very jealous of our stay and so I'm sure I'll be back in touch in the near future to book another group stay

Fishing (Salmon & Sea Trout):

The fishing at Lower Dess is on an exceptionally attractive, secluded left bank stretch of the river Dee which can be fished at low, medium and high water. Whilst the Dee’s reputation has traditionally been for prime spring fishing, more recently the summer fishing has been equally productive. The Dess fishings also benefit from a very good sea trout run in late June and July.

The beat is 2.25 miles long and includes 16 named pools many of which are against a woodland backdrop. The river bank is well maintained and there are a number of gabions and croys which have been carefully sited to improve the fishing. The beat is fishable at all heights and most of the pools can be covered without wading. This is a 4 rod beat.

Fishermen and their guests can avail themselves of either or both of the fishing huts on the estate. The award-winning hut at Upper Dess was built in 1998 and provides a feature fireplace, an outside terrace, kitchen and cloakroom.

When you fish at Lower Dess, you are in the capable hands of our ghillie, Eoin Smith. Eoin has fished these beats of the river Dee for the last 35 years so his experience and local knowledge are unparalleled. He is on hand to consult and advise throughout your stay.
